The Luige junction to be fully opened for traffic today

The entire site of the Luige multi-level junction will be fully opened for traffic today. From now on, the traffic on the Tallinn-Rapla-Türi highway will head via the overpass. The crossings with traffic lights on the intersections of the Tallinn ring road and the Tallinn-Rapla-Türi highway have been dismantled and replaced with two roundabouts. The speed limit on the overpass will be 60 km/h.

“Despite the challenging weather conditions in the last road construction season, the contractor succeeded in progressing so that to date we can open traffic in the entire junction in line with the final design solution,” said Jaanus Taro, road construction director at Nordecon AS. “I do hope that we will not see any huge traffic jams on the junction like before and traffic will also be safe during rush hour.”

The agreement for the construction of the Luige multi-level junction was entered into with the Estonian Road Administration and Nordecon AS and Järva Teed AS as joint tenderers on 7 September 2011. Although the contractual date of completion of the site was scheduled for late June 2013, the great bulk of necessary construction work has been done by now. Landscaping and some work relating to traffic arrangement are still in progress.

In the course of construction, the former intersection of the Tallinn ring road and the Tallinn-Rapla-Türi highway was substituted by an overpass across the Tallinn ring road. The newly constructed multi-level junction will make the flow of traffic considerably smoother and safer. An almost 3-kilometre stretch of the Tallinn ring road was reconstructed into a four-lane (2+2) Class 1 highway with a central reserve. Two roundabouts were built on the Tallinn-Rapla-Türi highway, which will facilitate driving from one highway to the other. The new network of collector roads and light traffic roads built in the area follows the location of residential areas and bus stops and an overpass across the Tallinn ring road for pedestrians and cyclists was also built.
