Nordecon will build the new academic building of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences

“The Estonian Academy of Security Sciences has been operating in unfunctional Soviet era buildings for years in Tallinn, which are large, expensive to maintain, and partly even in danger of collapsing,” said Katri Raik, Rector of the Academy. “The five highly problematic buildings, which we have been using so far, will be replaced by a modern academic complex that we can be proud of for our 27th year in operation. The new building will be the beacon of Estonian security: smart, open, and environment-friendly.” 

“Construction of the new main building of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences is a very important project for Nordecon – we get to contribute to better and higher-quality teaching of domestic security,” said Erkki Suurorg, Board Member of Nordecon AS. “Compared to the current main building of the Academy of Security Sciences, which is huge, but contains very few required rooms of suitable functionalities, the new building will undoubtedly be significantly more convenient for the students. I am sure that the improved academic environment will also support the substantive teaching and learning and the communication between the people.” 

The new academic building of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences will have up to three levels above the ground. The building will house study rooms, auditoriums, and offices. There will also be an indoor shooting gallery, virtual simulation centre, fire safety laboratory, prison imitation environment, and other special premises specific to the studies. The sports complex will include a full-size hall for ballgames, a gym, and the mat halls required for hand-to-hand combat trainings. The gross surface area of the building will be 12,069 m2.

The energy consumption of the new building will be approximately four times lower than that of the previous one. All energy-saving methods, which we are capable of building, have been included in the design of the building, including even distribution of indoor air based on the double façade principle and a heat recovery ventilation system. A geothermal heating system will be built for heating of the building and for cooling in the summer season.

The new academic building of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences was designed by Illimar Truverk, Janar Toomesso, Katrin Vannas, Sander Paljak, Kristjan Lind, Hannelore Kääramees, Kaur Käärma, Siim Tiigimägi, architects of OU Arhitekt11, and landscape architects Edgar Kaare, Terje Org, and Liina Einla from Tajuruum OÜ. 

Construction of the new academic building of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences is funded from the investment plan of the institutional development programme ASTRA for research and development and higher education institutions.
