Nordecon AS and Järva County Vocational Education Centre entered into an agreement on Wednesday for the construction of student housing and a canteen in Paide. The building, which will accommodate up to 220 students, will cost almost 3.1 million euros to construct.

“Putting together something like this, something socially oriented which looks to the future, is a great feeling for everyone involved, and the builders are no exception here,” said Avo Ambur, a member of the management board of Nordecon AS. “All the more so when you’re creating something brand new, with all the latest mod cons, for hundreds of students to whom it will be a home away from home in the coming years. It’ll be a great place for them to be, and that should help their studies. And the canteen and teaching kitchen we’re building will be the ideal training ground for future chefs.”

Ambur says the students will be housed in a four-storey building with a total area of 3985 m2. It will have 112 rooms with space for 220 students. The first floor will have a canteen and teaching kitchen and a study centre, while the remaining floors will be given over to living quarters. The planned size of the canteen facilities is 722 m2, which will include the canteen itself (with seating for up to 100) and kitchen, food storage space, a tasting room and classroom for use in cooking classes and changing rooms and bathrooms for students and staff. The study centre will cover 288 m2 and house the school’s library as well as a reading room and computer room.

Construction of the student housing in Paide is being co-financed through the Regional Development Fund of the European Union. It is due to be completed by January 2012.
