Nordecon AS and Napal AS have completed construction of the Ahtme peak load and reserve boilerhouses commissioned by Kohtla-Järve Soojus AS. The contract was valued at 8.6 million euros and represents the biggest central heating boilerhouse built in Estonia at any time in the last two decades. The new complex will supply almost 1300 properties with district heating.

“The boilerhouse is environmentally friendly, economical and guaranteed to operate exactly the way it should,” explained Jüri Mägi, the director of AS Kohtla-Järve Soojus. “Its construction is an important step in ensuring and improving heating supplies in the local area. It’s the biggest complex of its kind constructed since Estonia regained its independence, and it will boost the quality of life for a lot of people in this part of the country. Construction came in at 8.6 million euros, but with the added cost of linking it up to the gas network and two boilers we’d already purchased, the total cost was 12.5 million euros.”

“For Napal, the Ahtme boilerhouse is without doubt the biggest thing we’ve done this century,” said Toomas Laanpere, chairman of the board of AS Napal. “It’s a really powerful boilerhouse, but the technological set-up is surprisingly simple. Its greatest advantage is the increased efficiency of the boilers, which means spending less on fuel and helps keep production and maintenance costs down.”

“The peak load boilerhouse has a total capacity of 100 MW, of which 80 are being produced by the new boilers,” explained Jaano Vink, chairman of the board of Nordecon AS. “The other 20 are being covered by the two new boilers installed the summer before last in the old Ahtme heating station. Part of the construction work involved connecting the complex up to external networks, including 500 metres of new heating pipes. The complex operates on both natural gas and oil shale oil.”

AS Kohtla-Järve Soojus (www.kjsoojus.ee) operates a heating a power station in Ahtme and the Ahtme-Jõhvi heating networks.
