Minister of the Interior Pevkur: The Piusa border guard station serves as an excellent example for other border guard stations along the external borders of the European Union and NATO

“I am happy to observe that all border guard stations along the eastern border have been renovated now, and all border guard officers are provided modern working conditions. Furthermore, this date has a symbolic significance for Estonia, because on this very day exactly 23 years ago the last Russian border guard officer left Estonia. It is also the day when Estonia formally restored full control of her borders,” the Minister said.

In his address Hanno Pevkur reminded the audience the words of Major Juhan Paul, said in 1932, that the motto of the border guard is to guard the border vigilantly. “Major Paul added that when there are no borders there will be no country, no state, no people, and freedom of the people will be lost. I completely agree with him,” Pevkur mentioned.

According to Jaano Vink, the chairperson of the Management Board of Nordecon AS, a year ago when the corner stone of the future Piusa border guard station was laid, everybody promised that to make their best efforts to achieve good results. “Today we can all feel proud together, as the work was completed on time and cooperation between Nordecon and the Police and Border Guard Board has again been constructive and smooth. This has resulted in a modern, energy efficient and architecturally unique national defence complex, which is larger in substance than in form,” Vink said.

The celebration of the opening of the Piusa border guard station was attended by the Minister of the Interior Hanno Pevkur, the Director General of the Police and Border Guard Board Elmar Vaher, the governor of the Võru County Andres Kõiv, the commander of the Piusa border guard station Valmar Hinno, the chairperson of RKAS Urmas Somelar, and the chairperson of the Management Board of Nordecon AS Jaano Vink.

Riigi Kinnisvara AS and Nordecon AS signed the contract on renovation of the buildings of the Piusa border guard station in February 2015.

The complex of the border guard station consists of the main building, a vehicle shed, and a kennel building. The architect of the building is Magnar Meinart, the construction design was prepared by AS Amhold.

The final cost of the new border guard station is 4.62 million euros.

The total area of the two-storey main building and annexes is over 2500 square metres.
