Nordecon AS and its subsidiary Järva Teed AS entered into an agreement with the Estonian Road Administration today for the reconstruction of the Luige junction on the Tallinn ring road. The construction work will cost 8.9 million euros (before VAT).
"Construction of the junction at Luige forms part of the broader plan to make the Tallinn ring road a four-lane Class 1 highway, including reconstruction of the existing overpasses and bridges and the building of new multi-level junctions, collector roads and light traffic roads," explained Erkki Suurorg, a member of the Management Board of Nordecon AS. "Tallinn and the areas around it have developed rapidly over the last ten or so years, which is why there’s so much more traffic on the roads in and around the city. That all has a knock-on effect on traffic safety, and the capacity and quality of main roads and highways and the connecting roads between ports are just as important."
Suurorg says the reconstruction project for the Luige junction involves almost 3 km of the ring road being widened into a four-lane highway with a central reserve. The point at which the Tallinn-Rapla-Türi road meets the Tallinn ring road is to be developed as a multi-level intersection involving the construction of a 66-metre overpass. Roundabouts are to be added on both sides of the ring road for vehicles turning off. The entry and exit slip roads have been designed as speed-changing lanes.
A 57-metre light traffic overpass has also been designed as part of the project for the space currently occupied by Kaare Road. There will also be bus stops on both sides of the Tallinn ring road in this area, separated from the flow of traffic. Bus stops have also been planned for the southern circle of the Tallinn-Rapla-Türi road. 1.6 km of noise barriers will be erected close to the residential area in the village of Luige to reduce the noise coming from the roads.
The total length of roads to be constructed or reconstructed is 8.5 km, with almost 100,000 square metres of asphalt to be laid as part of the project.
Construction work is scheduled for completion by July 2013.
