Today will see the handover of the reconstructed section of road running through the town of Kunda by Nordecon AS. The repairs to the road, which has become the main thoroughfare of the town due to the high volume of traffic it receives and the number of key companies located in the area, cost 1.68 million euros.
"It was easily the biggest roadwork project undertaken in Kunda in recent years," explained Jaanus Taro, director of road construction with Nordecon AS. "That said, it’s not only important to the people who live here – it’s an important stretch of road for the whole county, and the whole country for that matter. It’s used by quite a few big companies in the area, so it gets a lot of transit traffic. The roadwork was significantly affected by the amount of heavy traffic it receives, since it had to remain open while we worked on it. But working closely with everyone involved we came up with the best approaches and brought the project in on schedule."
Taro says that reconstruction of the kilometre-long stretch of road involved establishing new base layers and two layers of asphalt concrete. Two new roundabouts were also constructed, as well as a lit path for pedestrians and cyclists along the length of the road, increasing traffic safety for them year-round. New drainage pipes were also installed for the collection of rainwater as part of the project, which began in April and was completed earlier this month. The main asphalting stage was completed at the end of September, while October saw traffic lights and signs and other fixtures erected and landscaping carried out.
Traffic on the road, including that of heavy vehicles, has increased every year due to development at the Port of Kunda and the growth of enterprise in the area. The road is used by a number of the town’s biggest companies – Kunda Nordic Tsement, Estonian Cell, Lajos, Kunrex and more. It is also an access road to the Port of Kunda.
