Today Nordecon will hand over to the Estonian Road Administration the completely reconstructed section between the 2.82 and 6.89 km marks on the Kuressaare-Nasva road. The total cost of the work was 1.96 million euros exclusive of VAT.

"Before construction started we had a relatively uneven section of road with pretty big dips and a cracked surface between Kuressaare and Nasva," said Jaanus Taro, director of road construction with Nordecon AS. "Along most of it there was no light-traffic road or street lighting. In other words, pedestrians and cyclists had no other possibility than to use a relatively dangerous, unlit shoulder. But now this section’s being thoroughly reconstructed, measuring 4 km, and connecting the light-traffic road with Kuressaare. The client, and the local authority, has every reason to be happy with the results!"

Describing the amount of traffic that is already using the road, Taro added: "It’s obvious the locals are happy with it, so I guess the unavoidable inconvenience related to the construction work has paid off! The project didn’t only involve resurfacing – we had to replace old pipes, put in drainage and complex stabilised layers and lay two layers of asphalt concrete cover. During the work new trenches were dug as well, and the old ones cleaned. In Nasva itself over 1.5 km of pavement was laid, and pipes for storm-water drains were built. And a lit light-traffic road was constructed, too, all the way along, which connects Kuressaare with Nasva."

Taro says that not just a high-quality road, but in every respect a modern, well-lit street with curbs and storm-water drains was erected in Nasva. "During design and construction a lot of attention was paid to integrating the new light-traffic road with the existing environment so that it wouldn’t cause damage to the local oak grove," he explained. "In addition, a change was made to the designs while we were working so as to preserve one of the symbols of Nasva – its crooked pine – which would otherwise have been in the way."
