Handed over to the Estonian Road Administration last month by Nordecon AS was the completely reconstructed section between the 34.8 and 40.3 km marks on the Risti-Virtsu road – which measurements have shown to be probably the most level stretch of road in the country.

"Anybody who’s driven to Saaremaa or come from the island by ferry knows the infamous section of road near Lihula where the asphalt’s full of cracks making driving both uncomfortable and to a certain extent unsafe," said Jaanus Taro, director of road construction with Nordecon AS. "Now at least part of that section of the road has been given a total makeover – almost six kilometres of it meets every road construction and driving safety standard you could think of! We also have good reason to think it’s the smoothest stretch of road in the country. Test results have suggested it is, in any case."

Taro says Nordecon has been able to boast of ever more even results of road construction in recent years, which is indicative of the continual developments in technology and in the level of skill and competence of the company itself.

Extensive work was carried out during reconstruction of the road section: part of the existing underlying soil was replaced; new culverts were constructed; a new drainage layer was established for the sealed area as a whole, as well as a new underlying gravel layer and a complex stabilised layer; two layers of asphalt concrete were laid; new adjacent ditches were constructed; and the existing ditches were cleaned. The total cost of the work was 1.77 million euros exclusive of VAT.
